| It had been running rich and backfiring a bit for a few weeks. We were trying to figure it out, but hadn't yet. When we left Friday afternoon, the car was driving fine. Somewhere along the way I noticed the boost gauge not going past 0, and no feeling of boost. The car was also smoking a bit from the exhaust. Apparently I was putting on a nice pyrotechnic display down the highway with those backfires. Wish someone had gotten a picture out of all that. Then I was smelling burning oil. We pulled into a car wash late at night to use the bright light in one of the bays and Bernie checked things out under the hood. Couldn't figure out quite what the problem was; disconnected the boost controller and aftermarket gauge from the system. Noticed a strange whistling/rattling sound but couldn't pinpoint it. The next morning with all the smoke, Bernie determined it was the passenger side turbo. Smoke was coming from the battery area under the hood as well as the exhaust. We figured the rattling was probably the turbo impeller, and that it shouldn't be driven hard or far with that going on. John's house was the end of the line for that.
